I read somewhere that Rackam uses bismuth in their alloy and that its needed for the detail. But their miniatures are very brittle. Were there any other considerations besides reactivity that works for or against bismuth in alloy? Does anyone know?

Bismuth is the only metal which expands as it freezes, this corrects many problems which occur because of contraction with other alloys.

I have not had good luck with Bismuth alloys, the ones I have tried aren’t stable, they get a bloom, so called ‘lead rot’ and lose flexibility.
